Fort of Fenestrelle: the Great Wall of the Alps

In the heart of Val Chisone, nestled in the Piedmont mountains, lies the Fort of Fenestrelle, the largest fortified complex in Europe and one of the most spectacular in Italy. Stretching over 3 kilometers, the fort climbs the mountainside, offering breathtaking views and a truly unique experience.

A masterpiece of history and military architecture

Built between 1728 and 1850, the Fort of Fenestrelle is a marvel of Savoyard military engineering. Made up of three connected fortresses and a covered staircase with 4,000 steps, it’s often referred to as the “Great Piedmont Wall”. Every corner echoes centuries of history—from Napoleonic troops to Risorgimento prisoners, up to modern restoration by dedicated volunteers.

Getting there

Easily accessible by car from Turin (about 1 hour), located along the Provincial Road 23 to Sestriere. Large parking available near the entrance. We recommend comfortable clothing and trekking shoes.
